Jose Lorenzo Diokno, popularly known as Pepe Diokno (born 13 August 1987) is a Filipino film director, writer and producer.
Early life and education
Diokno is an undergraduate at the University of the Philippines Film Institute.
His debut film Engkwentro (2009) premiered at the Venice Film Festival. It won the Lion of the Future- “Luigi de Laurentiis” Award for Best Debut Film and the Orizzonti Prize for new trends in cinema. The film, which tells the story of two teenage brothers on opposite sides of a gang war, also won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award for Best Asian Film at the 2010 Jeonju International Film Festival. It also won the Gawad Urian Award for Best Editing.
The said film is his first full-length film. It is inspired by a year of his research, visiting minors in jails around the country for a documentary in 2007.
In 2010, he received the Ani ng Dangal Award from President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. He was also included in the list of the world's most exceptional emerging filmmakers. The said list was published in Phaidon Press anthology “Take 100: The Future of the Film”.
Diokno is currently preparing to shoot his next film, Above the Clouds. The script he wrote received the Arte Prize at the 2012 International Film Festival in Germany. It also gave him a development grant in 2011 from the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. The film is scheduled to start shooting in 2013.
