Lagoon refers to a place inside the University of the Philippines' Academic Oval. It is located behind Quezon Hall near the Ampitheater.

It includes a pond, wide range of tress and lots of place to hangout with. UP students make films and documentaries here.

History

The UP Lagoon is well-known as one of the spots for the lovers inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. But before it was transformed into a “love nest," it has its developments through the years. During the 1950s the Lagoon was still a canal surrounded by tall grasses in which students rarely go to because of the idea of the place having snakes. Luckily, there was a development in the 1960s; it was modified to be a golf course. It was only during the 1970s and the early 1990s where major plans and changes occurred for the beautification of the lagoon.

Beta Epsilon Fraternity

It is the Brotherhood of Engineers which are the first college-based fraternity to be established at the University of the Philippines. Founded on August 23, 1929 by nine pioneering scholars, athletes and student leaders, Beta Epsilon has been a second home to the best and brightest from the U.P. College of Engineering.

They are worth mentioning since during UP’s 75th anniversary, Beta Epsilon gifted the university with the Beta Theatrum. This stage is used for activities like concerts and some plays before. Today the stage is used for various practices and photo shoots.

Amphitheater

This is a place formerly used for the legendary Cadena de Amor Festival which was awaited there by both senior and junior UP coeds and lastly this was where the Lantern Parade winds up. Until today the General Commencement Exercises are still celebrated here.

Charter Donor’s Garden

A garden that connects the amphitheater and the UP Lagoon. It was nicknamed as the Tres Marias Plaza.

This is a polychrome work is by Napoleon Veloso Abueva seen inside the Charter Donor’s Garden. This is the sculpture where the nickname of the Charter Donor’s Garden was based from.

Academic Oval

The Academic Oval or the Acad Oval is the elliptical campus road marked by the various academic and administrative buildings. It has a perimeter of 2.2 kilometers. It was said that there are more than 20 humps around the oval. The oval was made legendary by acacia trees which has 109 acacia trees on the outer lane while 172 on the inner lane. President Bienvenido Ma. Sioco Gonzalez and Professor Jose Vera Santos initiated the development of the oval. The former directed the planting of the acacia trees while the latter was the man behind the beautification of the Acad Oval. It was the year 1955 were the ikot jeeps first emerged and on 1979 was the year when the traffic lights were installed.
