Block is the group a freshman is first designated to upon joining his home unit (college, school, institute, etc.). It is very similar to what we consider a "section" back in elementary and high school days, as the students in one block get to stay together through pre-picked classes in the CRS and similar break times.

However, as time goes on and more UP students either drop out or delayed, it's not uncommon to see the original block dwindle in number in the same class, or even disappear and merge with other blocks. The Engineering college is infamous for this phenomenon; from five starting blocks, this could be reduced to only one block with students from different years by their graduating year.
